“Nowadays, children of mayors or county governors rarely go to vocational schools. Even those who say that vocational education is important generally do not send their own kids to vocational schools,” says Ji Baocheng, the ex-president of Renmin University (People’s University of China).
“Vocational education virtually becomes education for the masses. It is a forced choice for many children from ordinary family backgrounds.” Ji’s comment is confirmed in an investigation conducted by Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences. In the recent 3 years, 88% of students in postsecondary vocational schools were first-generation college students. In 2012, 82% of students in secondary vocational schools came from rural areas.
